Ode to Roomba – Again November 24, 2008

This weekend we really let Roomba go wild. We usually block off our living room and let him (yes, our Roomba is male) work the livingroom. On Saturday, we turned him on without blocking any of the rooms to our loft off, left for brunch, and came back home to a cleanly vacuumed house — and Roomba, he was right back in his dock, charging for his next job.

Can’t really sing Roomba’s praises enough.

Your boyfriend doesn’t need another Hermes tie with little fishies printed on it.

Let’s ditch the consumerist-mindset and give gifts that truly matter. Donate in another person’s name to the Defenders of Wildlife.

Over 800 wolves have been shot from airplanes in Alaska, or run down and chased so long that their hearts burst inside of their chests. Animal-rights activist or fur-wearer — this is something we all know is wrong.

Killing wolves from an airplane is not the same as hunting in a field with a rifle.  This isn’t just bad for wolves — it’s bad for human psychology, too, and it deeply undermines the already screwed-up relationship between humans and nature.

Click to make a monthly or one-time tax-deductable donation. This makes a great gift for the season, and you can give as little as $5.00.

Who What Wear Wrong November 24, 2008

Who What Wear Daily just popped into my Inbox and I have to say I’m baffled. The only thing on this list I agree with is the Chanel bag: that is a truly timeless, classic bag you will own forever. I can kind of see the white shirt, but there are plenty of decent, cheaper alternatives – like Brooks Brothers or Thomas Pink. But the bandage dress? I had no idea that was anything but an incredibly overblown fad. I can’t imagine spending that kind of money for a dress that only looks good right after a colonic.

The Marginal Utility of Shampoo Quality November 23, 2008

Purifying Shampoo For All Hair TypesGuardian Conditioner For Color-Treated Hair

I received a sample of ghd shampoo and condition with my last Sephora order, and just tried them out this morning. At the risk of tooting my own horn, one of my best assets is my hair — it’s the least high-matienance hair, ever. So I’ve always been a Head & Shoulders kind of girl.

But I really love this ghd stuff. I swear it took half the time to blowdry my hair, and it has never felt so silky and soft.

So is the increase in smoothness/softness/ease of styling (umm, if ever I were to “style” my hair) justfied by the increased cost? Combined, the shampoo and conditioner from ghd costs a whooping $50. That’s a 900% increase in cost from my current shampoo.

Something to noodle on. In the meantime, for you gals with a little more pocket money, I’d recommend you go ahead and splurge.

If there’s one blog you visit today, make it this one: The Daily Coyote.

An improbably beautiful young woman living alone in the Wisconsin wilderness, who takes in a baby coyote after his parents were shot. She updates us on Charlie, Eli the tomcat, and Chloe — her pictures are beautiful and her simple stories about Charlie and his development are incredibly poignant. Enough to make any city girl want to ditch the skyscrapers for an open field and a coyote. She’s secured herself a book deal — there’s really nobody I could be happier for.

Reminds me of this Don Edwards song…

Was a cowboy I knew in south Texas
His face was burnt deep by the sun
Part history, part sage, part mesquit
He was there when Poncho Villa was young

And he’d tell you a tale of the old days
When the country was wild all around
Sit out under the stars of the Milky Way
And listen while the coyotes howl

And they go… poo yip poo yip poo
poodi hoo di yip poo di yip poo
poo yip poo yip poo
poodi hoo di yip poo di yip poo

Now the long horns are gone
And the drovers are gone
The Comanche’s are gone
And the outlaws are gone
Geronimo is gone
And Sam Bass is gone
And the lion is gone
And the Red Wolf is gone

Well he cursed all the roads and the oil men
And he cursed the automobile
Said this is no place for an hombre like I am
In this new world of asphalt and steel

Then he’d look off some place in the distance
At something only he could see
He’d say all that’s left now of the old days
Those damned old coyotes and me

And they go poo yip poo yip poo
poodi hoo di yip poo di yip poo
poo yip poo yip poo
poodi hoo di yip poo di yip poo

Now the long horns are gone
And the drovers are gone
The Comanche’s are gone
And the outlaws are gone
Now Quantro is gone
Stan Watie is gone
And the lion is gone
And the Red Wolf is gone

One morning they searched his adobe
He disappeared without even a word
But that night as the moon crossed the mountain
One more coyote was heard

And he’d go, poo yip poo yip poo
poodi hoo di yip poo di yip poo
poo yip poo yip poo
poodi hoo di yip poo di yip poo

How rich is your life? November 21, 2008

If this thing is always in your face, I have a feeling you don’t have rich life experiences. It amazes me what I miss when I have my eyes glued to my Blackberry.

I think it entertains me/keeps me organized/keeps me in touch — but in actuality, I just end up becoming scattered. That glowing screen makes me miss the fall leaves, the funny exchange between the little old lady and her husband on the train. I miss sights and sounds that might inspire me, move me, or spike my curiousity. Life simply is less rich.

It really all goes back to this question:
